Description

More Christmas presents

3x4 hand cast plaster, hand painted sugar skull

I have been asked many times, so here you go ------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's how to make your own:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sugar skull mold - can pick up many types with many different styles of detail. Suggest eBay is a good place to look. The molds usually come with front and back of the skull - use just the front face portion of course

Plaster of Paris - go to local hardware store, buy a box, usually $10 will give you enough to belt out well over a dozen of these

Using very simple instructions on box for plaster, pour in mold and then after just 1-2 mins, insert a bent-out "paper clip" in back of mold. This is used to hang the skull

Pull out after 15-20 mins or when hard. I usually put mine in window to dry for a good 24 hrs before painting

The rest is up to you to decorate - paints, markers, etc.

I usually coat mine with flat primer or flat Montana spray paints first like one shown above. You can then use (as long as you did not coat with enamel or oil based paint) Sharpie water based poster paint pens.

I usually coat about 4 times with Krylon acrylic gloss, then follow this with Varathane polyurethane oil based coat (about 4-5 good coats). I usually use the gloss - it creates a great effect and its thicker than many other urethane spray coatings - also gives a good antique look (if you want that on your piece). Make sure to use the Krylon first for several coats to keep water based paint sealed.

Enjoy!
